Kilometre markers coming up short

I've just mapped a few routes that I have previously mapped on previous mapping programs and found discrepancies in gmaps with the kilometre markers. Using one route as an example, for all but the final (5K) point the km markers are in similar spots (close enough for user error to account for any differences), but then gmaps has the final 5K marker 3 city blocks earlier than the other program even though they both show the same final distance start to finish. 3 city blocks is much farther than 0.07 km. It's not the first time that the distance between the last kilometre marker, and the end point seemed implausible. Both programs appear to use Google maps as the base and the routes are in the centre of a large Canadian city. Is there any reason for this?
